Happy Holidays, Explorers!

I have absolutely loved teaching all of you this semester.  It was fun, exciting, and sometimes frantic few months.  Thank you for making the year so wonderful for me.

Hope you have a happy and restful holiday break.  See you next year!

Looking forward to 2011 (but not too much),

Ms. Davis

Smart Words 3

This week's 5 TAKS WODs are: DETECTED, DIFFERENTIATE, DILATION, DIMENSIONS, and DISCLOSE.

Each TAKS WOD will be posted on the class website (go to TAKS WODs on the right side under Labels) along with the definition and a sentence using the word, but if you want a more detailed definition, you can go to Dictionary.com to look up the word.  A complete list of TAKS WODs can be found in the TAKS WOD binder on Ms. Davis's desk.

Another good way to figure out what words mean is to use a Thesaurus.  A Thesaurus gives you a list of words that mean the same or nearly the same as your word.  You can use Thesaurus.com.

Not sure how to say a word?  Go How J Say to find out.

INSTRUCTIONS: Open a new tab, login to Blogger, and click New Post.  Title the post Smart Words.  Type one sentence using each of this week's TAKS WODs.  Number the sentences 1 - 5 and Underline the TAKS WOD in each sentence.  You may not use the same sentence given in the example.  You must write an entirely new sentence.

Smart Words 1

Okay Explorers, now that we've all had some time to settle into this class, our blogs will start to focus on TAKS vocabulary words.  These are words frequently used on the TAKS test, so it's important to know them.  Plus knowing them will make you sound even smarter.  :)

We have 5 TAKS WODs (Words of the Day) each week, and they are posted on the green wall to the left of the clock. We will begin each class by learning their meanings and pronunciations, and then we'll practice using them.

This week's 5 TAKS WODs are CONTINUOUS, CONTRADICT, CONTRIBUTE, CONTRIBUTION, and CORROSIVE

Magic

Today Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 debuts in theaters.  This is the first episode of the epic 2-part movie based on the seventh book in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.  The series follows Harry, who has just learned that he is a wizard and that there is an entire wizarding world that non-magical people do not know about, as he attends Hogwart's School of Magic to learn the things he needs be a great wizard.  There are several types of magic used in the wizarding world, charms - spoken spells, potions - a mixture brewed in a cauldron that has a magical effect on the drinker, transfiguration - changing one object into another entirely different thing, apparating - magically moving from one place to another instantaneously, divination - telling the future, flying on broomsticks, and several more.  If you could do magic, what would you do?

INSTRUCTIONS: Open a new tab, login to Blogger, and click New Post.  Tell me what 3 magical talents or skills you would choose if you could.  They do not have to be from Harry Potter, anything magic will do.   Why would you choose these 3?  Then click Publish Post, and you are finished!

Ms. Davis's Answer:
I would choose apparation, so I would never have to wait in line at the airport.  And I would choose transfiguration because then I would never have to look for anything, I could just change it into whatever I wanted.  And I would choose potions because I like to cook.

Peer Assistance

Recently in our BIM 1 classes we had to stop using headphones in order to get more efficient at Microsoft Excel.  But do not despair, we have a plan to get our headphones back.  And that plan is Peer Assistance.

The PA program encourages students to help students on assignments by giving them an added incentive - the chance of a free day and a party!  Each 6-weeks, the class with the highest class average gets a day off when the other classes are working and gets to have a class party.  PA is a chance to make the class's average even higher.  For each time a student helps another student, they get one point.  For each time a student asks for help from another student, they get one point.  It quickly becomes a cascade as more people complete their work and begin helping others.  At the end of the 6-weeks, students turn in their PA sheets and I tally the points.  Whichever class has the most PA points gets 3 extra points added to their class average in the running for a party.  Plus, if more students are completing their work and getting better at Excel, the grades will be higher anyway.

Peer Assistance helps EVERYONE in class.  It helps the students who need more practice to become Excel pros.  It helps the students who are pretty good at Excel because teaching always helps the teacher become more comfortable with the material too.  And it helps me, Ms. Davis, because I can only be in 1 place at a time.

Please give me some good ideas for incentives that people would like to get for Peer Assistance.  I'm open to suggestions, and I appreciate your assistance. :)

Peer Assistance Form

Peer Assistance

Today we started the Peer Assistance project in class.  What is Peer Assistance?  Who does it help?  What is the prize?

INSTRUCTIONS: Open a new tab, go to Blogger, and click New Post.  Tell me about Peer Assistance.  Answer the questions above.  What are some good incentives (prizes) that can be rewarded to the class or student who gets the most Peer Assistance points?  Then click Publish Post, and you're finished.

Ms. Davis's Answer: Peer Assistance is a program we are doing in BIM 1 to improve our abilities in Excel.  Students get one point for each time they help another student with an assignment and for asking for help from another student.  Who does it help?  A better question is who doesn't it help? It helps every student in the class and it helps me because I cannot be in more than one place at once.  The prize is 3 bonus points on your class average, which determines who gets a party next 6-weeks.  I need help coming up with prizes so that's why I'm asking you students!

Annexing

To attach, append, or add, especially to something larger or more important.

Using Word - Page Setup

The Ribbon: The strip of tools and options at the top of the screen.  The Ribbon is divided into parts, which are labeled on the bottom, Clipboard, Font, Paragraph, Styles, and Editing.  You can change the look of The Ribbon.
Page Layout: The tab on The Ribbon that helps you change the way your page is laid out.  You can use a preset Theme, change the Page Setup, change the Page Background, change page Spacing and Indents of Paragraphs, or Arrange page elements.
Page Setup:  Every time you open a New Page in Word, it opens with the same defaults.  Defaults are the basic settings that come with the package.  You can use Page Setup to change these settings using Margins, Orientation, Size, Columns, Breaks, Line Numbers, Hyphenation, and more.  Click on the little box in the bottom right corner of Page Setup to see the old Page Setup window that you remember from older versions of Word.
Margins:  When you click here, a list of Margin options drops down.  The icons on the right show the edges of the margins using blue lines.  You can change the size of the Top, Bottom, Left and Right Margins by clicking Custom Margins at the bottom of this list.
Orientation:  The way the Page is situated.  Do you want a Portrait (up-and-down) page or a Landscape (long-ways) Orientation for this document?  Most reports and essays you turn in will be Portrait, but you can use Landscape for many things as well, especially if the data is presented longer than it is tall.
Size: We usually use 8.5” x 11” paper, but you can use tons of different sizes, depending on what you are using the document for.
Columns: To break your page up into columns, highlight the text you want to put into columns and click the Columns button under Page Setup.  You can decide between several different styles.
Breaks:  Insert a Page Break if you want to break off the Page.  Place your cursor where you want the break and click Breaks to choose from several different options.

Two Truths and A Lie

Have you ever played the game Two Truths and A Lie?  You try to trick people by telling them 3 things about yourself, two things that are actually true and one thing that is a lie.  Then people try to guess which of the 3 things is a lie.  The object is to learn something about each other and to be creative in your answer.

Ms. Davis's Two Truths and A Lie: I have friends living on 6 different continents.  I worked at the Mesquite Rodeo when I was 14.  I ran with the bulls when I was in Spain in 2009.  ***Which one of these do you think is the lie? (You have to come to class to find out the correct answer.)***

INSTRUCTIONS: Open a new tab, log into Blogger, and click New Post. Title the post Two Truths and a Lie.  Write two things that are true about you and one thing that is a lie.  Try to make them tricky... let's see who can fool the teacher on this one. When you are finished, click Publish Post, and you're done!
